An enoturist does not necessarily need to be a wine consumer to be classified as such. The passion for various aspects involving the grape culture is the base of wine tourism, also known as enotourism.
This is a form of tourism related with aromas and flavors of wine and all wine culture, from visiting places of wine production to its tasting. Visitors are involved in wine culture by visiting the vineyards, by talking with the producers, by wine tasting, by harvesting and guided walks through the various stages of production of this drink.
Wine tourism has been growing substantially worldwide since its beginning 21st century, and in countries such as Portugal, this particular sector of tourism was one of which provided a higher growth to wine industry.
The market composed by enologists and wine lovers, is almost always characterized by a high economic power, they travel the world’s greatest wine destinations such as South Africa or the Valley of Colchagua, in Chile, one of the most important wine regions of the world where the grape Carménère is exclusively cultivated. This grape is originally from France, but it was decimated by a plague and the only region where it recovered is this specific region of Chile.
The Serra Gaúcha, in Brazil, or the Champagne region in France, where only the grapes that are grown there can name this drink, like Moet & Chandon or Don Perignon, are ultimate examples of other most visited regions by enoturists.
The Tuscany region, in Italy, produces the most reputable wines in the world, due to the high quality grapes, being one of the most wanted place by enoturists. The State of California, in the United States of America, is the fourth largest wine producer of the world, due to the diversity of grapes, there are about 100 types of grapes, it is also a must go place to wine culture lovers.
Hioja, in Spain, has about 500 wineries throughout the region and popular festivals devoted exclusively to wine, also attracts a huge number of visitors from all over the world.
New Zealand and Australia are also highly wanted as destinations for this market, such as Mendoza, in Argentina, one of the largest producers of wine, with about of 1200 wineries throughout the region.
